Press Release

Birmingham, Alabama.
Pastor, Author, and Contributor, Birmingham Times Religious Section, Publishes First Book—

(Birmingham, AL, January 2014)— Victor Paul Wayne Baugh, Sr., Ph.D. published by iUniverse, Inc., the leading provider of publishing technology solutions for authors, announced today that The Anchor Holds—Victor’s Story is now available at the publisher. The Anchor Holds is gaining attention from retailers, book sellers, churches and readers all over the country in just two weeks after publication.

Not too many of us have the nerve to bare our souls in a memoir or autobiography, but Victor has always been different, to say the least. As I read, it was not difficult for me to see how reliant he was upon his godly grandmother. She raised him, fed him, clothed him, and made sure he knew about Jesus at a very early age. She went to the extremity to get him properly educated and that in a parochial school north of Birmingham, where he had no choice but to ride a city bus day in and day out for twelve years, learning things about the street that were unthinkable for a young kid just trying to do the right things. The Navy is central to the theme of his story, having fallen along those pleasant lines because he so proudly served his country here and abroad. He shares thought-provoking and stimulating life lessons based on values his grandmother instilled. And there is a thread of those values running through his memoir that poignantly showed up all along the way, even on board ship in the Pacific Ocean.

The Anchor Holds—Victor’s Story
Victor Paul Wayne Baugh, Sr., Ph.D.

In a poignant story of one man’s loss, a plunge into deep despair, and a miraculous change when touched by the power of a loving Lord, Victor Baugh confirms the passion of purpose in a life controlled by someone greater than himself.

The year is 1958; the setting, Birmingham, Alabama, where a mother gives birth to a son though she had preferred abortion, but Victor’s grandmother, Lula Jones, intervenes, taking responsibility to raise a grandson she believes will one day preach the gospel. His father leaves when Victor is two years old, the year he narrowly escapes death by pneumonia, his grandmother hovering close.

At age six, Lula Jones registers her son for school at Holy Family Catholic fifteen miles from Birmingham, sends him off by city bus in uniform with tie and beanie and a little briefcase, his Bible tucked inside. The kids in the neighborhood harass him, hurl rocks and insults, and all the time his grandmother instills principles for living that exclude fighting and worrying about those who don’t understand. While in the ninth grade, Victor, with help from the priests at Holy Family, early-registers, and the day after graduation, he embarks on a lifelong dream, a career in the U.S. Navy. By the time Victor finishes boot camp and other required technical training, the Navy has joined him to an Elite Communication Special Operations Unit, based on his impeccable character and education. His reward—the high seas and ports of call all over the world.

The death of his grandmother with a massive heart attack leaves Victor heartbroken. Out of the Navy, he enjoys a season of politics, religion, and amassing of wealth. A string of misfortune leads him down the path of heartache and loss of worldly possessions and, temporarily, his wife. Everything he worked for is gone, but God in his mercy deals with him. He hits rock bottom, comes to himself like the prodigal and cries out for salvation to a loving, forgiving Savior. His life is made richer without all the worldly baggage when he fully surrenders to Christ and His calling.

His later years unfold with grace as he teaches that nothing in the world suffices without Christ at the helm of the ship. An emotional thread runs through this journey and Victor’s greatest lesson is that the anchor holds in every storm of life.
